Heritage Habitats: HTNS Works With Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture on Preserving Barns

In the summer of 2024, the Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia partnered with Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture as part our ongoing Registering for the Future Project to encourage farmers to register their barns with the dual purpose of protecting the buildings for their cultural importance and as habitats for barn swallows. Nova Scotia farmers have long benefited from the presence of barn swallows, who eat insects that would otherwise cause problems, however, the decreasing number of barns and farms in the province has made it hard for barn swallows to find places to build their nests. The similar decrease in the number of barns and farms has meant that there is a pressing need to ensure that barns and other farm buildings of different styles, uses, and cultural significance across the province are preserved.

This winter the Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture created a video telling more about the importance of this work.  You can watch the video here.

If you are interested in registering your barn or other heritage building please reach out to our office and we can help you with the process. Contact@htns.ca 902-423-4807
