Considerations in Improving Energy Performance of Heritage Building Envelopes  

A Lecture by Emma Sampson and Rachel Smith, WSP Canada Inc.

 

Improving energy performance of existing buildings is a cornerstone of decarbonizing our environment. Building envelopes can pose unique challenges when balancing heritage preservation with energy conservation. This lecture will outline fundamental principles of building science, common upgrades for better performing building envelopes and how they apply to heritage buildings.     

 

Emma and Rachel are part of the Building Sciences team at WSP in Dartmouth NS. 

 Emma is a Project Manager, focusing on existing buildings and envelope commissioning.  She formerly worked as the Heritage Officer for the City of Saint John and is a former member and chair of the HRM Heritage Advisory Committee.  Originally from Dartmouth, she grew up in the proposed Austinville Heritage Conservation District. 

 Rachel is an engineer and team leader of WSP Building Sciences in the Atlantic region.  She is the owner of a registered heritage property in downtown Halifax.
